Those new running shoes are great until they start to smell funky after a few workout sessions... Everyones gym shoes tend to get smelly, but not everybody know what to do about it. You can choose to chuck them in the washing machine, but they often lose their protective layer and your beautiful shoes become no longer water-and-sweat resistant. Luckily, there are many handy Do It Yourself tips that can make your shoes smell all new and fresh. 

1. Tea bags

Everyone has a few tea bags lying around the house and you can use them in this handy DIY.

This is what you need to do:

  • Put 2 tea bags in each shoe.
  • Leave overnight.
  • Bye stinky smell!

It really can't get any simpler!

2. DIY shoe deodorizer

Is the smell stronger than you thought or not completely gone? You can easily make a shoe deodorizer yourself.

What you need:

  • 1 small spray bottle
  • witch hazel
  • water
  • 6 drops of peppermint oil
  • 4 drops of tea tree oil
  • 2 drops of eucalyptus oil
  • 1 drop of thyme oil

Here's how to do it:

  • Fill half of the bottle with witch hazel.
  • Fill the rest up with water and leave around an inch empty at the top.
  • Add all the drops of oil.
  • Shake it well.
  • Spray it all the way in the nose and at the heel of the shoes.

3. Baking soda in a sock

If you bake every now and then, you tend to have these products lying around the house. Three ingredients is all you need for the dirty smell to disappear!

What you need:

  • 1 sock
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch

This is what you need to do:

  • Mix the three products together and put them in the sock.
  • Close the sock and leave it in your shoe overnight.
  • Your shoes are all fresh the next day!

4. Shoes from the freezer

It may sound a bit strange to put your shoes in the freezer, but it really works! The freezer kills the bacteria in your shoes, making them smell fresh again.

Here's how to do it:

  • Put your shoes in a ziplock bag and close it.
  • Put them in the freezer for 2-3 hours.
  • Take them out of the freezer and let them warm up to room temperature.
  • Your shoes won't smell bad anymore!
