Home made kale chips with a twist

Fit & Training door thijs

Hearing the word 'kale' might make some of us smile and some of us cringe, but bare with me! These home made kale chips with a twist could be the thing you've been waiting for. Sometimes it's all in the seasoning and the careful craftsmanship of preparing them for the fiery oven!

First things first!

Kale is super healthy! No, seriously. It's packed with a lot of nutrients, vitamins and minerals like protein, potassium, vitamins A, B6, C, Kcalcium, magnesium and iron.  That's not just it, this leafy green stuff is also rich in lutein, beta-carotene, it has a low glycemic index AND contains Di-indolyl-methane (DIM) - a metabolite of indole-3-carbinol is an effective immune modulator, anti-bacterial and anti-viral agent. To sum things up, this thing is really, really GOOD FOR YOU!

See below green kale leafs and red kale leafs, equally healthy!

Enough with the facts lecture, let's get the chips on the table! Kale chips, that is.

Start by getting your kale leaves clean and dry! Remove them from the stems and toss together into a large bowl, like so:

Lightly sprinkle some extra virgin olive oil (or any kind you want) on top and toss together until evenly distributed. NOW it's time to get creative! Spice up your kale using any (combination) of the following ingredients: pepper, garlic powder, chill powder, coriander, cumin, basil, tomato powder, ginger or even parmesan cheese, citrus zest or sweet syrup (read honey, agave nectar or maple syrup).

After you've treated the leafs to all that tasty and flavourful from the world of spices, gently lay them one by one on a tray lined with baking paper. Shove them in the oven and (preferably) cook them "low and slow" meaning around 25 to 35 minutes at 150 degrees celsius. You can always speed it up by increasing the baking temperature, though we would advise against that since that's how you'll destroy the nutrients and loose aesthetics (aka it will turn and ugly shade of dark greenish colour).

There you have it! Super delicious, nutritious, fully customisable treat to fit your healthy lifestyle!
